Some people spend their lives building successful careers. Others choose to build opportunities for those who have none. Rarely does someone walk away from professional success to dedicate their life to changing the future of hundreds of children. Yet that is exactly what one man from Hyderabad decided to do.
Pothukuchi Srinivas’s story is not about wealth, fame, or personal achievement. It is about recognizing hidden potential where others saw only poverty and proving that education can become the most powerful tool for social change.
He never imagined that a simple act of volunteering would eventually transform his life’s purpose. During the 1990s, he was working comfortably in a German company and enjoying a stable corporate career. Like many professionals, he had a secure job and a promising future ahead of him. However, a chance encounter with a government school teacher would set him on an entirely different path.
The teacher approached Srinivas with a request for help. The government school had nearly 300 students but only two teachers, making it difficult to provide quality education. Wanting to contribute in some way, Srinivas began spending his evenings teaching students after work.
What started as a small act of service soon became a life-changing experience.
One day, he noticed that a student consistently failed to complete his homework. Curious, Srinivas asked him why. The answer deeply affected him. The boy explained that after school he worked at tea stalls to help support his family. By the time he returned home, it was dark. Since the family had no electricity, studying at night was impossible.
The incident stayed with Srinivas.
Determined to understand the challenges these children faced, he began visiting their homes. What he witnessed was a harsh reality. Many students came from families struggling to survive. Their parents worked as watchmen, domestic helpers, auto-rickshaw drivers, construction workers, and daily wage laborers. Basic necessities were often difficult to afford, let alone educational resources.
Yet amid these hardships, Srinivas saw something remarkable. The children were eager to learn. They possessed talent, determination, and dreams. What they lacked was opportunity.
For many people, these circumstances would have been heartbreaking but temporary observations. For Srinivas, they became a call to action.
In 2003, he made a decision that surprised many around him. He resigned from his corporate job and founded the PSS Trust, an organization dedicated to supporting underprivileged children through education. It was a bold step, one that involved financial uncertainty and significant personal sacrifice. But Srinivas believed that real change required complete commitment.
The early years were far from easy. Resources were limited, and the number of children seeking support kept growing. However, challenges never discouraged him. At one stage, an abandoned water tank was converted into a classroom so that students would have a place to study. Every obstacle became an opportunity to innovate.
Gradually, the initiative expanded. More children enrolled, more supporters joined the mission, and the Trust began creating pathways for higher education and career development. What had started in a modest setting evolved into a movement that transformed countless lives.
Over the years, the PSS Trust has supported more than 1,500 children. Many students who once struggled to afford school supplies have gone on to complete college degrees and establish successful careers. Several have become engineers, software professionals, and skilled workers employed in leading organizations across India and abroad.
Some former students now earn annual salaries exceeding ₹20 lakh—a remarkable achievement considering the financial hardships they faced during childhood. Their success stands as a powerful reminder that talent exists everywhere, even where opportunities do not.
Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Srinivas’ work is what happened next. Many of the students whose lives were transformed by the Trust chose to return and help others. They became mentors, teachers, and supporters for the next generation of children facing similar challenges. In doing so, they created a cycle of empowerment that continues to grow.
Today, Pothukuchi Srinivas is remembered not for the corporate position he once held but for the futures he helped create. His journey demonstrates that meaningful change often begins with a single act of compassion and the courage to follow it through.
