Most people slow down after retirement. Some spend their days relaxing, while others look back on their achievements. But in a small corner of Assam, an 85-year-old man starts his day by lacing up his shoes and running 10 kilometers.

For Andhuram Das, age has never been a reason to stop. It has simply been another milestone in a lifelong journey dedicated to sports, education, and inspiring young people.

Long before he became known as a veteran runner and sports mentor, Andhuram Das was a school teacher. He taught history and geography to students, helping them understand the world through books and lessons. Yet his biggest impact was not made inside a classroom—it was made on the playground.

Nearly six decades ago, when Kho-Kho was still unfamiliar to many children in Assam, Das saw the sport as an opportunity to transform young lives. At a time when sports facilities were limited and awareness was low, he took it upon himself to introduce students to the game and encourage them to participate.

What started as a simple effort soon became a mission.

Every day after school, while most teachers headed home, Andhuram Das stayed back on the field. He spent hours training students, teaching them techniques, improving their fitness, and motivating them to believe in themselves. He did this without expecting rewards, recognition, or extra pay.

His satisfaction came from seeing children grow stronger, more confident, and more disciplined.

Over the years, the dusty playground became a place where dreams were born. Student after student joined his training sessions. Some came out of curiosity, while others discovered a hidden talent they never knew they possessed.

The results were extraordinary.

More than 1,000 students trained under his guidance. Many went on to compete at district, state, and national levels, carrying with them the lessons they learned from the man who believed in them before anyone else did.

For countless young athletes, Andhuram Das was more than a coach. He was a mentor, guide, and role model. He taught them that success is built through consistency, hard work, and determination. His lessons extended far beyond sports, shaping character and preparing students for life’s challenges.

But while he was helping others become athletes, he never stopped being one himself.

Unlike many coaches who eventually move away from active competition, Das continued to challenge himself physically. Running became a central part of his daily life. Year after year, decade after decade, he maintained a disciplined fitness routine that many people half his age would struggle to follow.

Today, at 85, he still runs approximately 10 kilometers every day.

His commitment to fitness has also earned him success in competitive athletics. Participating in veteran sporting events, he has won medals in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races. These achievements are not the result of talent alone; they are the product of a lifetime spent embracing discipline and refusing to surrender to age.

Watching him run is enough to challenge common assumptions about growing older. While many people see age as a limitation, Andhuram Das sees it as another challenge to overcome.

Perhaps the most inspiring part of his story is that he believes his journey is far from over.

At 85, he has set himself an extraordinary goal—to continue running until the age of 105.

For many, such a target might sound impossible. For Andhuram Das, it is simply another dream worth pursuing. His determination reflects a mindset that has guided him throughout his life: never stop moving, never stop learning, and never stop believing in what is possible.

In a world where people often search for motivation in books, seminars, and speeches, Andhuram Das offers something far more powerful—a living example. Through his actions, he demonstrates that passion does not retire, purpose does not fade with age, and dedication can outlast decades.

His story is not just about running. It is about commitment. It is about giving back to society. It is about choosing action over excuses and purpose over comfort.

From shaping the lives of more than 1,000 students to winning medals in his eighties, Andhuram Das has built a legacy that stretches far beyond the finish line.

And every morning, as he sets out on another 10-kilometer run, he continues to prove that when the spirit remains young, age becomes nothing more than a number.
