Across villages and farmlands, new-age tools are slowly redefining how crops are monitored, managed, and nurtured, bringing precision and intelligence into a sector once dependent largely on experience and manual labor.

One of the most compelling examples of this shift comes from Kerala, where siblings Devika and Devan Chandrasekharan founded a startup called Fuselage Innovations in 2020. Their goal was simple yet ambitious—to make advanced agricultural technology accessible, affordable, and practical for Indian farmers, especially those operating on small and medium landholdings.

Instead of building solutions that only large agribusinesses could afford, the founders focused on designing drone-based systems tailored to real farming conditions in India. Their work reflects a broader change in mindset: agriculture is no longer just about hard work and intuition, but also about data, precision, and timely decision-making.

At the heart of their innovation are two specialized drone systems—“Niriksh” and “Fiya.” Each serves a distinct but interconnected role in modern farming. “Niriksh” functions as an aerial crop intelligence platform. It flies over agricultural fields and collects high-resolution data that helps farmers identify early signs of pest infestations, plant diseases, water stress, and nutrient deficiencies. This early warning system allows farmers to act before problems spread, reducing crop losses and improving overall yield stability.

Complementing this is “Fiya,” a precision application system designed to optimize the use of agricultural inputs. Traditional farming often involves uniform spraying of fertilizers and pesticides across entire fields, regardless of actual need. “Fiya” changes this approach by targeting only the affected areas. This not only reduces chemical usage but also lowers input costs and minimizes environmental impact, making farming more sustainable in the long run.

What makes this model particularly impactful is its accessibility. Instead of requiring farmers to purchase expensive drone equipment, the company offers its services on a pay-per-acre basis. With costs ranging between ₹2,000 and ₹5,000 per acre, farmers can access advanced drone technology without bearing the burden of high upfront investment. This service-based model has proven especially beneficial for smallholders, who form the backbone of Indian agriculture but often lack access to modern tools.

The adoption of these services has shown promising results. Farmers using drone-based monitoring and spraying have reported yield improvements of up to 35 percent in some cases. Alongside higher productivity, many have also experienced significant reductions in fertilizer and pesticide consumption, leading to improved profit margins. In several instances, the savings on inputs alone have helped farmers recover the cost of services within a single crop cycle.

Beyond numbers, the real impact lies in changing perceptions. Farming communities that once relied solely on visual inspection and intuition are now increasingly open to data-backed decisions. This transition is not just technological—it is cultural. It reflects a growing trust in innovation and a willingness to integrate modern tools with traditional knowledge.

Currently, Fuselage Innovations works with more than 3,500 farmers and continues to expand its reach across different regions. The company’s efforts also align with broader national initiatives promoting agri-tech adoption, smart farming, and drone-based solutions in agriculture. As awareness grows and infrastructure improves, such technologies are expected to become more common across rural India.

Looking ahead, the potential for drone technology in agriculture extends far beyond spraying and monitoring. Future applications may include soil health mapping, predictive yield analytics, and integration with AI-driven farm management systems. These advancements could further strengthen India’s food security while making farming more resilient to climate change and resource constraints.

Ultimately, the rise of drones in agriculture does not signal the replacement of traditional farming practices. Instead, it represents an evolution—where heritage knowledge is enhanced by modern intelligence.
